How to estimate how much sod you need
Sod is typically sold in square feet or square yards. Pallet quantities vary based on the sod dealer and sod producer. Be sure to ask your supplier how many square yards or square feet are on a standard pallet.
Square and rectangular areas are easy to measure and estimate yardage. Simply measure the length of the area in feet and the width of the area in feet and multiply these two numbers to get a square footage.
Circular areas are easy to estimate as well. Measure the diameter (distance straight across) of the circle and then use the following formula for the area: 3.14 x (diameter) x (diameter) /4. Or pi x diameter squared divided by 4.
Irregular areas are the hardest to estimate. Try to divide the irregular areas into as many smaller square and rectangles as possible. Add up the smaller areas and finally estimate what you think you need on the edges.
