5 tips to keep you sod looking its best
After installing your new sod, its important to follow theses 5 tips to get most out of your new grass.
- Water: water twice a day at a minimum when your sod is transferred to your yard. Early in the day and then again late in the day is preferrable. Make sure to apply enough water so that the dirt-to-dirt contact area beneath the new sod is moist.
- Control the water rate. A slower, steady irrigation rate is better than a high pressure water hose. A half inch water rate per hour is better than a half inch in five minute rate. Don't wash the dirt away from the roots of the new sod.
- Make sure there are no air pockets in the new sod. The installer should have taken care to roll the turf to make sure the grass is properly installed but take time to make sure your soil contact is good.
- Shade is an enemy of most sod varieties. Adequate amount of sunlight is required for a good, healthy yard. The grass will naturally thin over time in areas where there is not enough hours of sunlight available for growth. Either trim your trees or create natural areas around shady sections of your yard.
- Proper fertililzer and herbicide applications are necessary for lawn maintenance. Hire a local firm if you are not experienced in this area. There are several good options out there for the local homeowner to choose from. Do not neglect this step. 2
